John was born and brought up in Dumfries, leaving at 18 to go to Strathclyde University to study Psychology.  He joined the British Red Cross as a First Aid volunteer aged 16 and worked at Public Events plus running training courses for over 30 years.   After a career false-start in Pest Control, John completed a Postgraduate in Personnel Management at Dundee before joining the British Red Cross as an HR & Training Manager.  At the British Red Cross, John was also responsible for Emergency Planning & Disaster Response for the organisation over the whole of Central Scotland, working at the Piper Alpha, Lockerbie. Rail Disasters in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the Dunblane Incident.

From British Red Cross, John moved to the Department of Health (England), where he worked in HR, Training, Organisational Development and Management Development being involved in major projects including TUPE, mergers, re-structuring and service redesign most prominently in the Social Care sector (including Mental Health).  He left the Department in 2015, gravitating back to Dumfries, for a less hectic lifestyle and to grow his burgeoning literary career.  He writes and publishes science fiction novels which he considers “Cheesy, but a thoroughly entertaining read’.   John enjoys history, quizzing, dogs and foreign travel (destroyed by the pandemic) to Austria, Germany, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, China.
